What this program is
There is a recognisable student who works hard and does badly. They reread the chapter, highlight it thoroughly, and cannot answer a question about it a week later. They start the essay the night before, not from laziness but because a large undefined task is genuinely harder to begin than a small defined one. The problem is not effort or ability; it is that nobody taught the method.
This program teaches it explicitly. Retrieval practice and spacing instead of rereading, because the evidence on that comparison is unusually clear. Breaking a long assignment into named next actions. A weekly planning routine that takes ten minutes and survives a busy fortnight. Attention and environment design. And the starting problem, addressed directly rather than moralised about.
It works alongside subject tutoring rather than instead of it, and it is often the missing half — a student who understands the material but cannot deploy it under exam conditions usually has a method problem, not a knowledge problem.
The eight sessions
How you are studying now
An audit of current habits, tools and timetable, plus a short walkthrough of how the student actually revised for their last test. Almost everyone discovers they have been doing the least effective thing diligently.
How memory works
Retrieval practice, spacing and interleaving, taught with the evidence and then applied to the student's real subjects in the session. Rereading and highlighting are retired with an explanation rather than a rule.
Planning the week
A ten-minute weekly planning routine and a daily list that fits reality, including sport, commute and family commitments. Plans that assume an ideal week fail in the first ordinary one.
Breaking down the big thing
Turning an essay, project or exam block into named next actions small enough to start. Procrastination is treated as a task-definition problem first, since that is what it usually is.
Attention and environment
Focus blocks, phone and notification design, task switching and its real cost, and building a study environment that does not require constant self-control.
Note-taking that is worth rereading
Taking notes for future retrieval rather than for transcription, adapted to the subject — a maths note and a history note should not look alike.
Exam preparation as a project
Working backwards from exam dates across every subject at once, and building a revision schedule that puts spacing where it belongs.
Handover
Reviewing what stuck, discarding what did not, and leaving the student with a written system they own and can adjust themselves.
