What this program is
Math is the subject where falling behind compounds most reliably. A student who never fully owned fractions meets ratios, then linear equations, then rational functions, and each one is harder than it should be for a reason nobody diagnosed. By the time the grade drops, the cause is usually two or three years upstream of the topic on the worksheet.
So tutoring starts with a placement check rather than with this week's homework. We work backwards until we find the last concept the student genuinely owns, then rebuild forward from there — quickly, because a student who once half-learned something relearns it fast. Only then do we work at grade level, and by that point the grade-level work has stopped feeling arbitrary.
Homework help is included but is not the program. A tutor who only answers tonight's questions produces a student who needs a tutor every night; the goal is a student who can start a problem they have not seen before.
How tutoring is structured
Placement check
A diagnostic across number sense, algebraic reasoning and problem solving, worked backwards from the current grade level until we reach solid ground. Parents receive the result in writing with the specific gaps named.
Rebuilding the foundation
Fast, targeted work on the missing prerequisites. Relearning is much quicker than first learning, and skipping this stage is why grade-level tutoring so often produces no durable change.
Grade-level fluency
The current curriculum, taught to fluency rather than to recognition — the student explains the method back, and can do the problem a week later without prompting.
Problem solving and transfer
Unfamiliar, multi-step and word problems, where the skill being built is starting when you do not yet know the method. This is the part that decides whether tutoring ends.
Assessment preparation
School tests, state assessments and end-of-course exams: what to review, how to study math specifically, and how to check work under time pressure.
Review and exit plan
Tutoring is meant to end. We review progress each term against the placement baseline and reduce frequency deliberately once the student is holding grade level independently.
Format and logistics
