What this program is
Dance taught badly is a room full of people copying a mirror. Dance taught well is a progression: a vocabulary of movement introduced in an order, corrected individually, and assembled into choreography once the foundation can carry it. The difference shows up within a term.
Classes here run in twelve-week terms grouped by level rather than by age alone, so a beginner is never in a room where everyone else already knows the vocabulary. Batch sizes are capped so that individual correction is possible — which is the entire reason to attend a class rather than follow a video.
Every term ends in a showcase. It is optional, and it is also the thing students remember, so it is built into the term rather than added when somebody has spare time.
How a term runs
Trial and placement
A free trial class in the batch you would actually join, so both the level and the instructor are checked before any commitment.
Warm-up and conditioning
Mobility, strength and injury prevention appropriate to the style and the age group. Every class starts here — dancers get hurt in the classes that skip it.
Vocabulary and technique
The movement vocabulary of the style, introduced in a deliberate order and corrected individually. Choreography that runs ahead of technique is where bad habits set.
Combinations
Short sequences that assemble the vocabulary, building memory for movement — usually the hardest part for adult beginners and the fastest to improve.
Choreography
The term's piece, taught in sections, with the standard raised as the group becomes able to hold it.
Showcase
A performance at the end of term for family and friends. Participation is optional; nobody is pushed on stage.
