What this program is

Bollywood choreography looks like one style and is actually several — classical Indian vocabulary, folk forms and contemporary layered together, which is precisely why it is hard to learn from video. Watching gives you the shape of a movement and none of the mechanics underneath it.

The term is structured so the mechanics come first. Conditioning and vocabulary in the early weeks, combinations in the middle, and the term's choreography assembled once the batch can hold it. Batches are grouped by age and level, so a first-timer is not placed behind students two terms in.

Every term ends in a showcase, and it is optional. Most students take part, and it is the single most common reason they enrol for the next term.

How the term runs

  1. 01

    Trial and placement

A free trial in the batch you would actually join. Level placement is done by the instructor, not by the form you filled in.

  2. 02

    Conditioning and warm-up

Mobility, strength and injury prevention appropriate to age and level. Bollywood is high energy and low warm-up is how ankles and knees get hurt.

  3. 03

    Vocabulary

The movement vocabulary underneath the style — classical, folk and contemporary elements — taught in order and corrected individually.

  4. 04

    Combinations and musicality

Short sequences that build movement memory, plus counting, rhythm and expression. Expression is taught explicitly; it is not something you either have or do not.

  5. 05

    The term's choreography

One piece, taught in sections over the second half of the term, with the standard raised as the batch grows into it.

  6. 06

    Showcase

A performance for family and friends at the end of the term. Optional, rehearsed properly, and the part most students remember.

Common questions

Please read before enrolling

Dance is physical activity and carries a risk of injury. Classes are taught to a level, not to a body — please tell your teacher about any condition or injury before you start.
