What this program is

Financial planning over a decade is mostly arithmetic. Over thirty or forty years it becomes a different problem: inflation compounds, tax rules change, careers break and restart, parents need care, and the single largest risk stops being a market crash and becomes outliving the money. Wealth planning is the discipline of making decisions that survive all of that.

This course covers the long arc in two halves. Accumulation: how allocation frameworks are constructed and argued about, how tax-advantaged accounts differ across a working life, how equity compensation and concentration risk behave, and what rebalancing does and costs. Drawdown: sequence-of-returns risk, the published withdrawal-rate research and its assumptions, annuitisation trade-offs, and the interaction between social security or state pensions, taxes and healthcare.

The last module is the one families put off. Wills, beneficiary designations, powers of attorney, guardianship for minor children, and the conversations that actually have to happen with adult children and ageing parents. We are not a law firm and cannot draft documents — but most of the damage here is done by things nobody got around to naming, and that part is not legal work.

The seven sessions

  1. 01

    The long-horizon balance sheet

Human capital as an asset, liabilities across decades, and the difference between a net-worth snapshot and a lifetime funding picture. This is where most people first see the actual size of the retirement problem.

  2. 02

    Asset allocation frameworks

How allocations are constructed and defended — risk capacity versus risk tolerance, time horizon, glide paths and target-date structures — together with the honest criticisms of each. Frameworks are taught, examined and left to you to apply.

  3. 03

    Accounts across a working life

Employer plans, individual retirement accounts, taxable accounts and health accounts: contribution mechanics, employer matching, rollovers, and the sequencing questions people most often get wrong when changing jobs.

  4. 04

    Concentration, equity compensation and windfalls

Restricted stock, options and employee purchase plans; why an employer's stock concentrates career and portfolio risk in the same place; and how to think about a windfall, inheritance or liquidity event before spending it.

  5. 05

    Drawdown and longevity

Sequence-of-returns risk, the withdrawal-rate literature and the assumptions underneath it, bucket approaches, annuitisation trade-offs, and modelling a life that lasts longer than the plan assumed.

  6. 06

Tax, healthcare and the retirement transition

How tax treatment differs across account types in drawdown, healthcare cost and coverage transitions, and the timing decisions around claiming state or social security benefits.

  7. 07

Estate basics and the family conversation

Wills, beneficiary designations that override wills, powers of attorney, healthcare directives, guardianship, and how to run the conversation with adult children and ageing parents. Checklist to take to an attorney — not a substitute for one.
