What this program is

By the time an admissions officer reaches the essay, the transcript and the test score are already known. The essay is the only place a student explains what those numbers do not: how they think, what they noticed, what they did about it. That is why a generic, well-polished essay is worse than an ordinary-sounding specific one.

Our process starts nowhere near a draft. The first sessions are interviews — a coach asking questions until material surfaces that the student had not thought was interesting. Structure comes second, drafting third, and revision takes the most time, because the difference between a fine essay and a memorable one is almost always made in revision four through seven.

One rule governs the whole engagement: we do not write the essay. Coaches ask, react, mark up and challenge. Every sentence submitted is the student's own — which is both an ethical requirement and, practically, the only way an essay survives an interview or reads as one voice across a personal statement and eight supplements.

How the coaching runs

  1. 01

    Discovery interviews

Two to three sessions of structured questioning to surface material — moments, obsessions, contradictions and turning points. Most students arrive convinced nothing has happened to them; this stage is where that turns out to be false.

  2. 02

    Topic selection and angle

Choosing between candidate topics on the basis of what only this student could write, then finding the specific angle. A common topic told precisely beats an unusual topic told vaguely.

  3. 03

    Structure and first draft

Outlining the shape — where the scene starts, where reflection enters, what the last paragraph earns — before drafting. The first draft is deliberately fast and deliberately imperfect.

  4. 04

    Revision cycles

Multiple rounds of line-level feedback: cutting throat-clearing openings, replacing abstraction with detail, and testing whether the reflection is genuinely the student's own thinking. This is the longest stage and the one that decides the outcome.

  5. 05

    Supplements at scale

'Why us', community, activity and short-answer supplements across the school list, with a plan for what can responsibly be adapted between schools and what must be researched fresh.

  6. 06

    Final read and submission check

A last pass for consistency of voice across the whole application, plus formatting, character limits and the details that get missed at 11pm on a deadline.
