What this program is
Junior cricket is coached badly more often than it is coached well, usually by a single well-meaning adult taking every skill for every age group. A young quick gets his action corrected by someone who last bowled at school, a batter is told to keep his head still with no explanation of what that changes, and everyone bowls as many overs as they want.
This program is structured against that. Batting, bowling and fielding are coached by staff who specialise; batches are grouped by age with coaches experienced in that age group; and each player has an assessment record per skill so progress is visible to the player and the family rather than being a matter of opinion.
Workload management is treated as a coaching duty. Junior fast bowlers follow age-appropriate over limits, because lumbar stress injuries in adolescent quicks are common, well documented and largely caused by adults not counting.
How a term runs
Assessment and grouping
A first session assessing batting, bowling and fielding separately, so a player joins the group that fits rather than the group their friends are in.
Batting
Stance, grip, backlift, head position and shot selection, worked in drills and then under pressure. Video is used because a player who sees their own trigger movement corrects it far faster.
Bowling
Run-up, action, alignment and release, coached by bowling specialists, with attention to the action types most associated with adolescent back injury.
Fielding and fitness
Catching, ground fielding, throwing mechanics and age-appropriate conditioning — the part most junior programs neglect and matches are lost on.
Match skills
Building an innings, bowling to a plan, running between wickets and game awareness. Skills coached in the nets do not automatically appear on a Saturday.
Assessment and report
End-of-term per-skill assessment with a written report and named goals for the next term.
