Usage

Usage is part of Conventions of Standard English in the ACT English section. The questions below are written in the style of the real test, each with the answer and a worked explanation.

Question types you will see here include subject-verb agreement across an interrupter, agreement with inverted or compound subjects, agreement with collective and indefinite subjects and pronoun-antecedent agreement.

Common traps: agreeing the verb with the noun inside the intervening phrase; agreeing the verb with the noun right before it in an appositive; treating a plural-looking phrase such as along with as part of a compound subject.
